How I Got My First Lanyard
Let me tell you how I received my first lanyard. Working in retail, I had a million keys to keep track of. The most important ones were used to open the cash registers during a shift change. Each of our four registers had a different key plus the manager key that had to be used at the same time. We left the main key in the registers, and it was my responsibility to have the manager key on me at all times for when an associate needed to open
their drawer.
There was a backup key in the office the managers shared in case we forgot to bring our key. I was no different than anyone else and often made use of this backup key when I left mine at home. During a shift change on a busy day I dug my key out of my pocket so I could open the drawer of an associate. Fumbling, I dropped it into a small crack where the counters met. After trying in vain to get it out, I went for the backup key. It wasn't there, someone must have accidentally taken it home with them.
The locksmith showed up and laughed at my predicament, then pulled a lanyard from his toolbox, emblazoned with his company name and phone number. I placed my new key on right away, even if I dropped it I could easily fish it out now, and I was also less likely to forget it at home. Plus, if I did have another mishap, it would be a breeze to find the locksmith's phone number next time I needed him!
Lanyards help catch deli robber
Chicago – City police arrested a 19-year old male late last night in connection with the deli robbery on Lowe Ave. According to Detective Lt. Jackson, the robber who was not identified by name, was under the influence and made several vital mistakes, leading to his arrest. He was caught only one block from the crime scene.
Around 10 p.m. the deli owner and several customers were threatened when an armed robber entered the store. He was carrying a hunting knife, which he violently waved around. Holding the knife to the owner’s chest, and threatening to kill the man, he forced everyone, including the owner, to sit in the back corner of the store. He then asked a mother, who was holding her two year old daughter to collect everyone’s cell phone and put them in his backpack. When the child shifted and started to cry the robber did not notice that the woman had accidently dropped one of the phones.
An employee from a nearby law firm, who had come in to buy corn beef sandwiches, recognized his phone. While lying on the floor, as ordered to by the robber, he motioned to his two co-workers that he needed their security card lanyards. Once they were in his possession he attached them to his own. The makeshift string was long enough to loop around the phone and pull it closer. The recovery went smoothly and did not attract the attention of the robber, who was too busy emptying the cash register, grabbing pre-packed sandwiches from the cooler, and dismantling the store’s phone.
While the robber was distracted, the law firm employee dialed 911 and whispered “help”. A police car patrolling the area was dispatched and caught the robber as he was leaving the store with his loot.
The deli reopened shortly after the investigation was concluded. All goods and cash were returned.
Flag Lapel Pin I never leave home without my flag lapel pin proudly displayed on my lapel. I ordered my flag lapel pin when my daughter joined the Navy and have worn it every day since she was called to duty overseas. I love that it is a noticeable way to display my patriotism and my support for all of our troops.
